Aromatherapy is the use of
organic essences from aromatic
plants and flowers and can be traced
back as far as 3500BC, the
priestesses of Egyptian temples were
burning Frankincense to clear the
mind. The Romans used essential oils
for massage and aromatic herbs
within the home.
The essences or Essential Oils as
they are more widely known are
extracted from a variety of plants.
Every essential oil has its own
unique healing properties and
fragrance. Several essences can be
used in combination to promote
healing on various levels, Physical,
Mental and Emotional.
The essential oils work in two ways,
firstly when using them in
conjunction with massage they are
absorbed through the skin and
secondly through the inhalation of
the aroma.
Essential Oils can be used in many
ways such as Massage, Bathing,
Compress and Inhalation and can help
most ailments. Massage especially is
used widely in Hospices and for
terminally ill patients. It has been
reported by the media that the use
of massage therapy helps the
patients to cope with the stresses
of long-term illness.
Many ailments are found to
materialise from emotional traumas.
For example if someone is suffering
from arthritis, Rosemary, Juniper or
Chamomile may be considered to help
the Physical aspects of the
condition. The person's feelings
would also be taken into account;
are they suffering from resentment
or anger about their condition. If
this were the case then different
oils would be chosen to help with
these psychological aspects or
combined in the synergy.
Correct and proper use of Essential
Oils helps to promote a more
balanced body and reduces the risk
of succumbing to everyday illness
and stress. They can also help to
promote the ability to cope with
potentially difficult situations and
events.
Aromatherapy can also stimulate the
immune system thereby helping to
avoid the 'Run-Down' feeling that
can often lead to colds and flu.
MASSAGE
Massage is the therapeutic use of
the sense of touch, either by
oneself or by another. Touching is
not just therapeutic but is
necessary for a normal happy life.
Instinctively we touch or rub a
painful area to give relief and we
also hug each other for comfort and
affection. Massage in itself is a
very relaxing experience. You can
use various mediums such as baby
oil, powder, body lotion and of
course Essential Oils combined with
carrier oil. Massage is applied
directly to the body using various
hand movements ensuring contact is
maintained at all times. By
combining Massage with the use of
Essential oils you are getting the
benefit of both therapies in one
session.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A THERAPY
SESSION
A full case history will be taken
before any treatment takes place and
you will be asked questions about
your current health. This enables
the practitioner to ensure that the
correct essential oils can be
selected for your therapy session.
It is generally a good idea to have
a bath or shower prior to your
massage. This allows the essential
oils time to be absorbed totally
before your usual cleansing routine.
During the treatment body privacy
will be respected at all times.
Afterwards
You will be encouraged to drink
plenty of water to help to cleanse
and re-hydrate the body. Try not to
do anything too strenuous after the
treatment – it is best to be able to
go home and relax after any
treatment session.
Further visits
These will be discussed with you,
and will largely depend on your
condition and how you feel the best
way to continue is.
